A reader passes along this Wired article (hey, it's totally new to me) which describes an attempt to create (scientifically) the most annoying song, evar:

An online poll conducted in the '90s set Vitaly Komar, Alex Melamid and David Soldier on a quest to create the most annoying song ever. After gathering data about people's least favorite music and lyrical subjects, they did the unthinkable: they combined them into a single monstrosity, specifically engineered to sound unpleasant to the maximum percentage of listeners. The song is not new, but it resurfaced on Dial "M" for Musicology.

Amazingly, this "most unwanted music" contains little dissonance -- that would have been too easy. For the most part, they seem to have tried to assemble these elements in a listenable way.


You can listen to the song over here—Be sure and sound off down in the comments to share how long you lasted before becoming completely and utterly annoyed. My annoyometer got pegged at 03:41.

On a related note, here's the most annoying 30 seconds ever—Thanks to Li'l Jimmy Norton:

Context: The song's Canadian, so to nobody's surprise, many of the annoying elements revolve around perceived American traits—Jingoism, Wal*Mart, patriotism, and the like. Still, it is so expertly assembled, I think it will remain on the highest pillar of the history of annoying songs for many centuries to come.

Which reminds me, there's another Canadian song that's far less annoying, but just as funny. The original content warning stands today as loudly as ever.

Update: Apparently, I'm a wuss. Fine by me—though I do plan on listening to the song on the way to work on Monday. Maybe if I get all of my irritation out by the time I get to the office, it'd be easier to get through the day... ;-)

*I know it sounds scary, but the music didn't peg my meter at all.

Mind you I manage audio studios and laboratories for an arts school, and have heard compositions from students that is very weird and IMHO far worse. But what do I know about Art?
