Socialists on Parade Invade

You thought, ok. making the wearing of seat belts a law is a good thing. It protects those too stupid to protect themselves. You may have even told yourself that it was to help lower the cost of insurance.

Then, you allowed your government to outlaw the use of your hands to hold a cell-phone while driving. You told yourself, these stupid people can't talk and drive at the same time. Serves the public good to prevent accidents by people talking on cell phones. And, amazingly enough you were ok with the hands-free phone technology. You said it made no difference and prevented many a accident.

Now, not content to leave you alone now, bent upon all the power you have given them over these last few decades, representatives are now going after more things you do in a car. For the public good.

New Jersey has already taken cell phones and text messaging out of the hands of drivers, and now one legislator hopes to do the same with in-car navigation systems.

Democratic State Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith has introduced a bill that would “prohibit the manual operation of a global positioning system (GPS) device or similar navigation device by the operator of a moving motor vehicle”. If passed, the ban would be the first of its kind in the nation.

Are you ok with this too? When are you going to finally open your eyes and see that this is an inch by inch encroachment into your personal freedoms. Each new law like these takes away more from personal choice and responsibility.

What will be enough for you to say, "Enough!"? Will it be when they make hands-free radio mandatory? Or when they bring back the auto-locking seatbelts? Or how about when they outlaw fast food drive-thrus? It would save the planet and prevents billions road accidents.

Or, how about just outlawing fast food restaurants altogether? You are too stupid to feed yourself and your kids correctly based on government established guidelines. It is for the public good!!

These are not isolated examples. Check HERE and HERE.

Or, will you be finally upset enough to take a stand for your own freedoms when they take your car away? How about when they take your truck or SUV away from you? Wouldn't it be better for the environment and the safety of everyone on the road if everyone was in mass-transit? (Aren't all our cities moving that direction?)

*Well, I agree with outlawing cell phones and text messaging while driving. Those people are dangerous.

A couple of days ago a woman zoomed by me. She had a baby car seat in the back (I couldn't see if it was occupied) and she had one arm on the steering wheel driving, and both hands just texting away!

I bet she was looking at her screen twice as much as she was watching the rode.

*But you know, we already have laws against driving while distracted. Do we really need separate laws defining each and every thing that can distract you.

Kind of saying you can't murder. And then turn around and say, you cant murder indians, or blacks, or ... whatever. There is no reason to define what not to murder when you have a law that says all murder is bad.

People run the risk of forcing their lifestyles on other people when one says, "I don't do it. They shouldn't do it." While that is good for some things like morality for a christian based community, but can be bad when socialists and liberals want to impose restrictions... for the greater good.

I guess I am becoming a bit more libertarian the more this nation turns to socialism.

But note, the ever increasing PUSH to impose one's beliefs upon the rest of the country. One doesn't believe in eating at McD's. Thus, they want a law banning it.

People want to ban drive-thrus. Thus they want a law banning it.

Their desires are valid as well. But, is it reasonable and constitutional to do it?

*There's a big difference between a choice that only causes harm to yourself and one that could harm others...

If McDonald's is bad for your health, don't eat there, but don't impose your healthy diet on others and deprive them of the pleasure...

Cellphone drivers are a danger to other people and, despite laws to ban distractions while driving.

I understand what you are saying - we have a law against murder, so its absurd to create a new law that makes it illegal to, say, commit murder with a chainsaw. We shouldn't have to specify each and every conceivable method.

But "Distraction" is subjective. Its a bit more vague than "murder." What distracts one driver may not distract another. And I'm sure it causes problems trying to prove a "distraction", while banning cell phone is very specific.

I'm straying off topic.

Your point is well taken.

Its amazing any of us middle-aged and older folks even survived to adulthood! Everything we managed to grow up on is dangerous and should be banned according to some pansies.

:-)

PS: I think Jenny is spam. I've gotten similar messages from others. Usually there's a link in there somewhere...

*Yes, I agree. This is all a fine line that we walk. When do freedoms trump safety. When does general safety overrule freedom?

For example - how many times did we hear that the patriot act was a violation of freedoms, but then the counter argument was that it protected safety to a greater degree than it overrode personal freedoms.

And you are correct, it is a wonder we ever survived with swingsets that were not anchored down or had plastic tubes on the chains. We even played out in the streets when we were young.

And, me and my friends even threw rocks at each other in a nice game of dodgeball.

*Lol, when I was young, every kid in the neighborhood had a BB gun. That's how we played "war" - shooting BB's at each other.

None of our parents ever said "You'll shoot your eye out!" or any of that crap. Our parents had the attitude that, if we got hurt, we'd learn a lesson.

Aside from some hellacious welts, we never got seriously injured, except one guy who had a BB go in one cheek and out the other. Missed his teeth and tongue, fortunately. But damn, the was funny. We laughed our asses off over that.

He had to get a stitch on each side.

You know what? When he got home, we continued the game.

Kids were a lot tougher then.

*hahahahhhahaah.
Exactly.
We even used to play in the storm drains under the sewers. No problems. Course, when I told my mother that last year she freaked. Said she never knew. I told her that was kind of the point.

Now, when I go to get an MRI, I am claustrophobic as hell.

How many kids these days go adventuring and play with Horned Toads, keeping them as pets and feeding them ants?

oh the days........

*Thanks Gordon. While we can't measure up to your famous sphere of influence, we do try. We might not always see eye to eye over here, which is good in my opinion, we always seek to find some form of agreement. And, we know how to debate civilly.

While we may disagree with some blog posters and commentors, we welcome all discussions. I pray that we have yet to tell someone to get off of here. I have yet to see that occur.

I appreciate the good vibes Gordon. Thanks.

Are you sure you got the right Gordon?

ps Did I say something disagreeable or uncivil? Just sharing my displeasure with the Nanny State.

*hahahhahahaa... YEP. I especially like the pork in our 6MB.

No. No you did not. You just mentioned the post itself and I took it to mean the comments as well. As the comments took off from my post - and then the back and forth with me and DMartyr (us old farts).

Share your displeasure all you want to my friend. We need more of it. Too many apathetic and publicly-educated people in this nation will lead it to ruin.

*WEll, .... we DO have a problem with the "overly sensitive" types around here. We might have to have an attitude adjustment. See if we can't kick you over fully to the obnoxious state. You and Upyurnoz can be friends then.

hahahaha har har har har.. hyuck hyuck..
