Fairfax County to Bow to Saudi Arabia (Again)

This is still not your County government!

Word has it from a number of sources that the expansion of the Islamic Saudi Academy will be heard by the full Board of Supervisors this evening. I attended the Planning Commission hearing on this project back in March, and was totally appalled at how much of a double-standard there was. People who spoke out in support of the ISA expansion were treated with the kindest, puffiest non-questions imaginable, while people who went on the record against it were subject to harangues from the intimidating audience and vicious cross-examinations by the Commission itself.

To anyone who wants to attend, it will be held at the Fairfax County Government Center tonight at 6 PM, in the big conference room that's off of the right-hand side of the lobby. (I will be unable to attend due to a busy semester out at Mason, unfortunately.)

You can read Snapped Shot's original reporting on this project here, here, here, and here. It goes without saying that I remain wholeheartedly against this disproportionate expansion on rural property that would otherwise be completely shut off to new development.

For up-to-the-minute reporting of tonight's meeting, I recommend reading: Black Velvet Bruce Li, Crystal Clear Conservative, Northern Virginiastan, and of course, my good friend Pamela Gellar at Atlas Shrugs.

*Where are all the NIMBYs who come out to oppose every cell tower, gas station and back yard deck expansion?

Maybe they are a little scared of the ROP?

*Forest,

There were a number of opponents who spoke up against the expansion back in March, many of whom lived around the ISA's property. Their complaints and concerns were more often than not related to the danger of the road, or the insuitability of that rural area to host the LARGE structure proposed by ISA, etc. In each and every case, the Planning Commission directed queries to the County supporting staff that were present that were worded in such a way to undermine the testimony provided by the opponents. In other words, the information provided by the opposition was completely ignored by the County government.

There isn't much you can do to fight that kind of bureaucratic machinery.

Regards,
Brian

*pam geller is a total coward. she bans people for disagreeing with her. also, she's totally off her rocker concerning anything even tangentially related to islam. once she started cheering anti-semites, i realized she had lost her marbles completely.

*... Says the gentleman who hides behind an alias.

Say what you want about Pamela, but at least she's brave enough to speak her mind without hiding behind the mask of anonymity. (And this is not influenced in the least by the fact that I do the same. Okay, maybe a little... ;-) )

As for comment policy, I've stated repeatedly that having things wide open is the only way to get truly open and honest debate. There are also plenty of bloggers out there that, for reasons that are entirely their own, take a heavily-moderated approach to blogging. (This spans both sides of the aisle, by the way.)

As such, I will say only that my policy is mine, and hers is hers. Neither is better than the other.

Regards,
Brian

*i never questioned that she was willing to speak her mind. that's not why i think she's cowardly. nor do i think anonymity necessarily shows cowardliness. if so your co-bloggers are a rather cowardly lot.

but yeah, pam is a coward because she bans people for expressing opinions contrary to her. i've been banned three times over there (the bans wear off after a year--i get one comment a year over there! if i'm lucky it can last 30 minutes).

i appreciate your much more open comment policy. but i disagree that neither is better than the other.

*Municipalities usually bend or ignore their own laws in order to appease local residents who complain instead of to accommodate a developer. At least that's been my experience (usually being on the developer's side of the table).

I wonder why they are so eager to submit the will of Allah in this case? Is it money or are they just afraid of being labeled racist? All I know is that zoning a planning board members never make our arguments for us. We need to respond to every resdent's complaint even if it's completely irrational or idiotic.
