"..a basic misunderstanding of capitalist principles. "
If that isn't the best and most perfect explanation of Obama's complete educational background, I don't know what else will.
Well, besides the political, organizer-focused, Marxist theological seminary school.
Caroline Baum at Bloomberg has piece perfectly describing how we are now facing just a few basics options in our future. This one led by this guy:
If the public option is self-sustaining without the taxpayer's subsidizing it???? WHAT THE ....??
A government program IS solely subsidized through the confiscation of monies earned by its people. Is he seriously thinking of having a government option charge premiums? But, wouldn't that mean people would be paying EXTRA for that service then? This absolutely makes no sense whatsoever.
The only alternative is to return to fiscal restraint and national standards. Standards based upon the Constitution.
Like she highlights, maybe the post-office should be retired. If the popular Arena Football League can be retired and file for bankruptcy, then so can the USPS.
Some other great points:

For example, asked at the Portsmouth town hall how private insurance companies can compete with the government, the president said the following:
“If the private insurance companies are providing a good bargain, and if the public option has to be self-sustaining -- meaning taxpayers aren’t subsidizing it, but it has to run on charging premiums and providing good services and a good network of doctors, just like any other private insurer would do -- then I think private insurers should be able to compete.”

The USPS lost $2.4 billion in the quarter ended in June and projects a net loss of $7 billion in fiscal 2009, outstanding debt of more than $10 billion and a cash shortfall of $1 billion. It was moved to intensive care -- the Government Accountability Office’s list of “high risk” cases

Some other great points:
He has failed repeatedly to explain how the government will provide more (health care) for less (money). He has failed to explain why increased demand for medical services without a concomitant increase in supply won’t lead to rationing by government bureaucrats as opposed to the market. And he has failed to explain why a Medicare-like model is desirable when Medicare itself is going broke.
...
What’s more, if the USPS is struggling to compete with private companies, as Obama implied, why introduce a government health-care option that would operate at the same disadvantage?

Ok, I'll give you another chance to read this quote that Obama made reqarding his theory how private insurance companies, who operate to make a profit, could compete against a non-profit government-mandated option.
Now it is your turn. Decipher that statement. Do your best. The winner with the best decryption will win an all expense paid subscription to this glorious website.

My take is that he is completely clueless how the non-government run markets work. He thinks that companies can operate WITHOUT profit. Thus the reason why he, and the current administration, believes all profit is evil and must be confiscated. He also believes that the government operates though the charging of fees and premiums instead of the ever-present heavy-forced taxation.
But, you see, he is one cool snake. He is actually making a reverse statement. He speaks of what the government option "should" do and says if it "does" operate like the private insurers, then they should be able to compete. He may be stupid but he is not unsmart.
I believe he is saying that if the government option charges premiums, has good doctors and provides a good service, then the private insurers would be able to compete.
But, we all know that a government option does not have to charge premiums, does not have a good network of doctors and no government option provides good service. Thus, the private insurers WILL NOT be able to compete against that at all.
He may be ignorant on the workings of the real and fiscalreality of a free-market capitalistic society, but he does know how the government works.
