Obama Improves Our Security... by REDUCING OUR SECURITY

I'm watching live on Fox right now, and am stunned at the two-faced statement.

Who knew you could strengthen American defenses... by shutting down defense systems that protect our allies. (Other than puffing up a vaporware program that he promises his Administration is working on. Soon. Really. Some day it'll be up and running.)

Update: Noz points out that this missile defense system was widely opposed by both the Czech Republic and Poland, and that it even led to the collapse of the Czech government.

On that note, I stand corrected. If neither country wanted this particular missile defense system, then perhaps it's best that we not deploy it.

Thanks for the correction, Noz!

*yeah, he removed a missile defense system that couldn't possibly work either against russia (they have too many missiles for 10 anti-missile battery to be effective) or "rogue nations" like iran or north korea (poland and the czech republic have the wrong geography to intercept those missiles), that was unpopular with the people of the countries where they were putting the system (opposition to the missile defense plan caused the collapse of the czech government last march), and which needlessly damaged relations with russia.

the entire system was widely mocked as a bush-era national security boondoggle in both this country and eastern europe. so naturally, it spurs right wing outrage when obama finally stops the madness.

*Noz, if you can provide links to articles listing how these systems were opposed by the Czech Republic and Poland, I will officially retract my stance on this. It has been my read on events that Poland was heavily in support of this system, and that it directly protected them from all sorts of dire rogue states. (But if I'm wrong, then I will be glad to admit it.)

Regards,
Brian

*no problem.

since bush announced the deployment of the system in 2007, there have been a few different polish/czech public opinion polls. there's this one from poland:

here's a poll from the czech republic:

and here's an article about the collapse of the previous czech government because of its support of the missile defense plan:

*Remember, it was opposed at the height of the Bush Derangement Syndrome and the European press was stating that Bush wanted to kill them all....

Perhaps those governments were worried about Russia and Iran and were using these agreements to show that the US would back eastern Europe.

Now, not so much. The decision to depoly was 50% political. This decision is an appeasement to the POSSIBILITY that Russia will overturn its policy of assisting Iran with its nuclear progrmam. Obama bought a pig in a poke. He seems to go out of his way to distance himself from traditional American allies.
