Strangely enough, the Obasmic American media seems to be completely silent on this rather significant news event:

A tense standoff has developed in waters off Somalia over an Iranian merchant ship laden with a mysterious cargo that was hijacked by pirates. Somali pirates suffered skin burns, lost hair and fell gravely ill “within days” of boarding the MV Iran Deyanat. Some of them died.

Gee, what disease could those symptoms possibly be describing?

Hint: It's probably not awesomeitis.

In an election year, when one of the candidates for the Presidency has expressed his intent to enter discussions with a terrorist nation, don't you think the curious actions of said nation would be.... somewhat newsworthy?

Reuters reports on the definite success of the recent conference between Western nations and Iran over the latter's "worrisome" nuclear buildup:

Iran says nuclear talks a step forward

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's president described talks with world powers on its disputed nuclear programme as a step forward on Sunday, official media said, even though the meeting in Geneva failed to produce any breakthrough in the standoff.

At Saturday's discussions in the Swiss city, the six powers gave the Islamic Republic two weeks to answer calls to rein in its nuclear activities or face tougher sanctions after talks ended in stalemate despite unprecedented U.S. participation.

Wow, it's interesting that Reuters has this upbeat picture of events, considering that they did, after all, end in stalemate.

So how much effort did Reuters go through to get this scoop? Which crack in-country Reuters reporter took the question to Mr. President-ijad himself to get the final say on the matter?

Newspaper Director To Be Arrested For 'Insulting' Muhammad Mahmoud

This is why it is so important for us to stand firm on free speech. Once you concede to limiting the freedom of expression out of respect for religious 'sensibilities,' it opens the door to a never-ending cycle of intimidation and terrorism.

Forced to respect the wishes of radical Muslims, Iranians face harsh sentences, possibly execution, should they 'insult' Islam or its child-raping founder. Now, the Iranian regime is imposing the same standard of sensitivity for its dictator-in-chief:

Iran's judiciary on Tuesday ordered the arrest of the director of a leading reformist newspaper over an article attacking President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his remarks on the Shiites' "hidden imam."

Mohammad Javad Haghshenas, director of Etemad Melli newspaper, has been issued with an order for arrest and investigation on charges of spreading lies and publishing "an insulting piece", a spokesman for Tehran public and revolutionary courts told the ISNA student agency.

True Justice In Iran

Apparently Iran can do some things right. Usually, Iran hangs gays and labels them "rapists." But in this case, it appears the punishment fit the crime:

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has hanged five men convicted of raping and murdering a young woman, a state-owned newspaper reported Monday.

The men were convicted of kidnapping the woman, raping her and then dousing her with gasoline and burning her alive.

The IRAN newspaper reported Monday that the crime was apparently in revenge for the woman's failure to marry one of the men. Her family opposed the union.

'Death to Ahmadinejad!'

A step in the right direction. I know there are many Iranians - especially among the young people - who would love to see the end of Ahmadinejad's regime.

TEHRAN, March 19 (UPI) -- Many Iranian youths rallied in streets across the country, shouting "Death to Ahmadinejad," in celebrations marking the end of the Persian calendar year.

The last Wednesday of the Persian calendar is celebrated as the Fire Festival in Iran, with bonfires and firecrackers marking the occasion.

In the western city of Ahvaz, angry mobs declared "Freedom is our legitimate right" while demonstrators in the western city of Sanandaj shouted "Death to (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad," Ynetnews reported Wednesday.

Never forget them.

Gateway is reporting that the tinpot tyrant of Iran is to adopt a culture of martyrdom:

"Beware the great Comma in the sky!"
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said the country's economic woes can be solved by the "culture of martyrdom, the Mehr news agency reported.

"If we want to build the country, maintain our dignity and solve economic problems, we need the culture of martyrdom," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying in a speech on Wednesday in the western city of Hamedan.

He described martyrdom, dying or being killed for one's religious beliefs, as "a quick and shortcut way to reach the summit of salvation."

He did not say how becoming a martyr would help the economy, which is struggling from high inflation.

The president was speaking a day after ousted economy minister Davoud Danesh Jaafari became the latest person to launch a withering attack on him for his unconventional economic policies.

Ahmadinejad has been criticised for pumping excessive liquidity into the economy to fund infrastructure projects, causing huge money supply growth and triggering Iran's current inflation of around 18 percent.

Sure beats that whole "culture of life" thing, huh?

Of course, if Mahmoud is serious about his new economic plan, I would suggest that he do us all a favor and start with himself. After all, it's always best to lead by example, is it not?

Iran Expelled for Showing... Missiles?

Iran was expelled from a Malaysian military convention for exuberantly displaying its missiles:

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Malaysia's deputy prime minister says Iran has been ordered to leave an international defense show in Kuala Lumpur. Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Iranian firms exhibited missile systems at the Defense Services Asia show that were "offensive" and contravened U.N. resolutions.

Not sure what was so "offensive" about it yet, but whenever I think of someone running around showing their "missile," I immediately think of Ace. Even moreso when we're talking about offensive missiles!

I'm going to post this picture directly for two reasons: One, I think the image has been manipulated, and would love to hear from the rest of you as to whether or not you concur. Two, as I mentioned previously, I do not acknowledge the copyright claims of terrorists.

So, with that disclaimer in mind, I'd like for you to consider the following picture. Pay particular attention to the woman on the left—Anyone else think that the lighting on her outfit is all wrong?

The pattern looks "off" to me, too. It's either a really modern design, and thusly quite camera-surly, or Ah-maddy-jab has been following in CAIR's footsteps with one of his female relatives.

Charles beat me to this one, though it wasn't for lack of trying. I saw these photos early this morning, but refrained from posting it for some goofball reason (i.e., got tied up IRL). This is ordinarily the kind of thing that I would've posted in a heartbeat.

I guess this means that Iran is field-testing the catchy new slogan, "Israel must be wiped off the map," for this year's ever-exciting Naqba celebration.

You think that's catchy? Wait until you see the gift-bags!

Iran's Connections to Terrorism

There's never been any doubt in my mind that Iran bears a pretty significant responsibility for unleashing groups like Hamas and Hezbullah on the world, but there have always been a pretty persistent group of (generally left-leaning) nay-sayers that insist that Iran is acting honourably, and that anything that happens to a Western nation that harms it is of its own doing.

To those naysayers, I am absolutely delighted to present concrete proof of Iran's official support of the terrorist thugocracy in Lebanon.

Now can we start the bombing?

Oh yeah, you're welcome to send along the told-ya-so's whenever you'd like, JC—at least, as far as point #4 is concerned... ;);)

TEHRAN, Iran—Iranian authorities banned five Web sites that comment on current events for "poisoning" public opinion ahead of the crucial mid-March parliamentary elections, the state radio reported on Thursday.

The move came two days after Iran's hard-line constitutional watchdog reinstated more than 280 candidates, including 70 reformists, for the polls. Reformists have complained the reversal was insufficient to ensure a fair election.

In the past, the authorities have occasionally closed down some of the hundreds of private Web sites that comment on Iranian news and politics. But this was the first time they closed down five at once — a reflection of growing tension ahead of the March vote.

Even though the sites closed are thought to be either hardline or conservative, the move could also reflect an eagerness by the authorities to silence disparate voices to push through as critique-less a polling as possible.

In his speech, Ahmadinejad accused his domestic critics of aiding foreign enemies, noting his ‎administration's remarkable achievements in various fields since taking office in 2005, despite ‎efforts by some "to destroy the administration from the very beginning."

Sure, he's less of a threat to the world than Bush. Keep telling yourself that.

Happy "Death to America" Day

It would seem that Iran is celebrating the anniversary of the seizure of our Embassy today. From the looks of it, they rounded up their best and brightest to commemorate the event—an outpouring of genuinely manufactured outrage, for sure.

Freedom of Religion in Iran

For a behind-the-scenes look at how Jews are treated in Iran, I highly recommend reading this article. [Ed.—Link is fixed. Thanks for pointing out my faux pas, SD!] Maybe this is who Mahmoud Ahmadinejad meant didn't exist in the Islamic Republic.

One Iranian Jew interviewed by Hoffman said that Jews in Iran know they are sitting on a powder keg--at least half of them think that either Israel or the US will attack Iran's nuclear reactors. And when they do, the Jews of Iran will pay the price. Even without encouragement from the government, the Iranians on the street will take it out on the Jews.

Another Iranian Jew tells Hoffman that it was not the threat of war that brought him to Israel, but the desire to live as a Jew. "There, it is difficult to keep Mitzvot, to keep Kosher, to pray and to learn about Judasim. On Shabbat the children have to go to school—everything there is more difficult.

He continues, saying that it is the Israeli government that Iran hates—and not the Israelis themselves. He believes that things are better than they were 10 years ago—when there was a water fountain in the marketplace in Tehran with 2 faucets: one for Muslims and one for Jews. If a Jew dared to drink from the faucet for Muslims he would be beaten up. Today it is different.
