Does anyone else find this frustrating? Does anyone else find it infuriating that these people are paid upwards of $228,000$220,000 a year and they have done squat to protect this economy? And yet, for many years, over and over and over again, they continue to get paid to surf, download and store porn on their government computers.
Senior staffers at the Securities and Exchange Commission spent hours surfing pornographic websites on government-issued computers while they were being paid to police the financial system, an agency watchdog says.
The SEC's inspector general conducted 33 probes of employees looking at explicit images in the past five years, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press.
The memo says 31 of those probes occurred in the 2 1/2 years since the financial system teetered and nearly crashed.
And it gets worse...
- A senior attorney at the SEC's Washington headquarters spent up to eight hours a day looking at and downloading pornography. When he ran out of hard drive space, he burned the files to CDs or DVDs, which he kept in boxes around his office. He agreed to resign, an earlier watchdog report said.
- An accountant was blocked more than 16,000 times in a month from visiting websites classified as "Sex" or "Pornography." Yet he still managed to amass a collection of "very graphic" material on his hard drive by using Google images to bypass the SEC's internal filter, according to an earlier report from the inspector general. The accountant refused to testify in his defense, and received a 14-day suspension.
- Seventeen of the employees were "at a senior level," earning salaries of up to $222,418.
An accountant who spent nearly all of his work day surfing for and downloading porn on to government computers, seeking ways to bypass the internal filters was only placed on a 2-week suspension??? Who in the real world wouldn't have been fired for such activity?
Most of us in the private sector struggle with an average pay of $50,000 and know the value of a job well done. We know the great impact of losing that $50K job as well. But these people feel no shame in spending month after month surfing porn while at work while earning up to $222,000 a year. But then, nothing seems to be new here for government workers.
It is time these agencies lose their funding. NOW!
[UPDATE:] SEC responds to the over-hyped issue...
SEC spokesman John Nester issued a written statement saying the memo
by Kotz shows that every instance of inappropriate use of the Internet"
was detected by the SEC's own surveillance and referred to the inspector
"Each of the offending employees has been disciplined or is in the
process of being disciplined. Some have already been suspended or
dismissed," Nestor said. "While any misuse of government resources is
always a concern, since February we have further increased penalties. We
will not tolerate the transgressions of the very few who bring
discredit to their thousands of hardworking colleagues."
Good thing they jumped right on that.. 5 eyars after in some cases, 2.5 years in others. "We will not tolerate"... yeah, doesn't mean much now does it.
[UPDATE 2:] Rep Bawney Fwank says its mostly Republican's fault. They were the ones in charge of everything before Obama and the Dems took over. Of course.
