Even if we take Beck's sincerity at face value, I'd be skeptical and outright suspicious of any politician who promised "simpler times" for the US. Roger Ailes (FNC's head honco) has to know the negative effect beck is having on the network's credibility, but the monster ratings are hard to pass up. So perhaps Ailes is simply going to let beck keep going until he has that nuclear meltdown (the really big one we have yet to see) and then his decision to pull the plug on beck will essentially be made for him. But in the meantime, beck's numbers from 5-6pm ET lift FNC's average rating for the day by a significant amount, thus allowing FNC to charge higher rates for their ads on all its shows, not just beck's. Just a thought from a cynical TV producer!

I've noticed that tendency in Conservative culture for a few years now... the longing for an idealized past, some idyllic model of life to be preserved like a fly in amber, or restored... faux melancholy over an imaginary fall from grace. I see it as an extension of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden theme, culturally -- and an inability to cope with the present and the future, thus retreating into the past from comfort -- psychologically. No matter the angle, it's f***ed.

I think Beck only recently watched the end of Season 1 of Mad Men, where Don Draper makes that Kodak presentation.

Draper is pitching a fantasy about America and about the family, while knowing all the time that it's a total lie.

Throughout the season, Don Draper - all while slowly revealing to us his true identity - has been sleeping around behind his wife's back who, not the dimwit she's painted to be, knows her husband is cheating on her and cunningly reveals it to her psychologist knowing full well (because she sneaked a peek at the phone bill) the doctor will tell her husband saving her from the confrontation.

In the end, and due in big part to his preparation for the Kodak pitch, Don realizes he's got a great family and that he'd be wise not to rick losing it as he did his first family. In the final scene, we see him come home from work and tell his family he would, after all, go with them on on the family trip he'd earlier said he wouldn't. This being a television drama that needs tension to maintain viewership, we quickly see that scene was all in his head and when he opened the door to his house the second time, it was empty and his family and left without him.

In other words, it's all about self-delusion, lies, and cynical conscious manipulation of the public.

Glenn Beck is no Don Draper, but he likewise makes a living peddling bullshit.

This needs to stop. First of all, I'd like the chance to vote for a Republican sometime in my life and second of all, even if I never wanted to do so, this country needs at least 2 sane, strong and functioning parties to work properly.

It does reference what Latif Mojib said, among others. They say clearly that Mojib believes the cooling is temporary. They are also clear in saying "such dramatic falls in temperatures provide superficial evidence for those who doubt that the world is threatened by climate change."

More cognitive dissonance. The crying alone goes against the "beta male" meme we hear about frequently in blogs that support Glenn Beck (e.g. Hot Air).

The 1979 bit is a kick in the pants because Jimmy Carter was in his second year of office. Last time I checked Carter wasn't popular with Beck audience members.

The Cold War was still present including the Iranian Revolution of 1979 amongst other crazy things. Total murders in the United States for 1979 was 21,460 compared to 16,272 in 2008.

We had the meteorologist from the local news come and visit our school when I was in 6th grade. We had to submit questions even for that two days before - they were going to choose the "best" ones, since tv cameras were involved. I was absent that day, and the administration wouldn't even review my question to see if it was good enough. (It was more than good enough - it was, like, 1,000 times better than the ones that got picked.)

I would disagree with you, being truly libertarian, does not make one close to anarchy. That is like saying being a democrat makes you close to a socialist (which I know seems to be popular to say these days among some), but we all know that is not true.
We could just be arguing semantics. I'm 30 so for my entire life the Republican party has been 30-50% filled with the religious right. I believe the religious right (and thus the GOP) supports policies that I believe are as restrictive and anti-liberty as many of the policies on the left.

Yous cowboy fans brought up the records, talking about only losing to undefeated teams. Romo is a good QB though and talk of benching him is stupid. We have a turtle for QB in St. Louis. But I may have some good news on my college football front as John Gruden is rumored to be a potential coach for Louisville!

John Gruden is a potential coach for everyone it seems. The Cowboys, the Redskins, the Raiders again after Tom Cable goes to jail, San Diego if they don't get their shit straight. NC State, Lebron James' old high school, and Team USA soccer.

Tony Romo is not a good quarterback. A good quarterback wins games. The fact that Tony Romo can't pull out a tough game, let alone a playoff game, is proof that the Cowboys need to light a fire under his butt, or start looking for a better quarterback. The Cowboys also need a new coach. Where's the discipline on that team?

Tony is doing just as best as he can. Coach is a very nice man. What's the problem?

This is a loaded phrase like "family values," and it's highly subjective. Even if we take Beck's sincerity at face value, I'd be skeptical and outright suspicious of any politician who promised "simpler times" for the US. ESPECIALLY if the politician was conservative, because I am reasonably certain what that would mean.

In simpler times, women and Negros knew our places, and gas was cheap. I don't think I'm being mean by assuming that's what he means, because honestly, what time in American history has ever been simple?

Any fan of Oakland, DC, St. Louis, Tampa, and 8 or 9 other teams would gladly trade you. I'd rather have a QB who can't close a game, than one who can't even keep you in a game. At least you guys have some hope.
