When I hear "Major" I think of my dad, who retired from the Marines as a Major. It is unfathomable to me that a man of equal rank to my dad could do something like this. Guess you never know.

Interesting, Fox is saying they have a name but are not saying it until it is thoroughly confirmed. A little un-Fox-like.

"probably two shooters"

15 rounds, 4 guns?

Earlier CNN reported that the shooter that was killed had two handguns. With the numbers, that doesn't jibe with a single shooter.

Typically, officers have sidearms and average enlisted soldiers only have a rifle issued to them.

Big brother is USAF Lt. Colonel. I've watched his colleagues "grow up" since College ROTC and commissioning. I've never met one I wouldn't trust my life or the keys to a nucelar missile to. This is weirdness beyond my experience.

It's pretty generic as far as Islamic names go, without specialized spellings so family origin could be from anywhere. E.G. There are Hezbollah and Palestinians named that as well.

78 Diamond Bullet  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 2:52:10pm

Despite the apparently coordinated, multiple attacks and the fact that at least one of the shooters is presumptively Muslim, CNN still has this non sequitur in its reporting:

Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues.

In June, Fort Hood's commander, Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, told CNN that he was trying to ease the kind of stresses soldiers face. He has pushed for soldiers working a day schedule to return home for dinner by 6 p.m., and required his personal authorization for anyone working weekends. At the time, two soldiers stationed there had committed suicide in 2009 -- a rate well below those of other posts.

These guys could have been shooting up the place from an APC built out of Korans and CNN would still likely try to imply that it's just PTSD.

Yeah...but those fucking idiots weren't given the rank of Major in the Uited States Army.

85 Dreader1962  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 2:52:38pm

It's possible that the Governor does not have the specifics on the people in custody. It would probably be best to wait until they give out the information in a few hours (or perhaps tomorrow).

As far as a Major not being able to advance if he was an Islamic radical - they really don't pursue this unless there is a reason to do so. Any soldier with a clearance would have to answer questions that, if honestly answered, would reveal something. I would imagine that an Islamic radical would not be truthful about his proclivities, though.

I retired after 20 years in the Army and I can't figure out how they would detect this before the attack.

Wolf Blitzer is just doing an update. He stated that the two being held are still at this point being called "suspects" (and not "shooters" -- although that's what Perry called them, "three Shooters.")

He also nominates creationists to the school board and thinks national healthcare is a reason to secede from the Union.

re: #78 Diamond Bullet

Despite the apparently coordinated, multiple attacks and the fact that at least one of the shooters is presumptively Muslim, CNN still has this non sequitur in its reporting:

These guys could have been shooting up the place from an APC built out of Korans and CNN would still likely try to imply that it's just PTSD.

Actually, this is normal for CNN. They modify individual paragraphs of their online stories as new information becomes available. The paragraphs here are from the original posting, and the editors apparently haven't made their periodic "full sweep" of the story to reorganize it in light of all the new information that's flowed in since the first posting.

I don't see any attempt to push the PTSD angle even here. The story notes that the suicide rate at the base was below average. When I read that a couple hours ago, my take away was that PTSD was one of the more unlikely possibilities.

131 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 3:01:07pm

Perry said all three were shooters; Blitzer says that two in custody are suspects. Semantics aside, it's too soon to tell what role each played in this or why the dead major (or two others arrested as suspects) engaged in mass murder.

So does jumping to conclusions when you don't know all of the facts.

Also, if you're throwing around accusations of "PC Crap" leading to murder, the implication you're making in this scenario would be that the United States Army's negligent "PC Crap" attitude led to 12 people's deaths. The man was a major. I'm siding w/ the army until the point comes where its revealed that they should have known better.

How about for today, or hell, even for the next few hours, you hold off on the knee-jerk, borderline racist reaction and just express some reverence for the fallen.

Twelve Soldiers Killed in Fort Hood Shooting - ABC News

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The general said there were "eyewitness accounts of more than one shooter," and the others were tracked to an adjacent facility.

We should all remember this day. Those who died were killed by the same totalitarian hatered that drove the 9/11 hijackers. WE should always remember the dea, and work to finish the task tthey have begun. Armistice Day is not for another 6 days, but here is a poem often posted on that day:

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The number of casualties argues against handguns, but it also argues against a single shooter. I think the main focus will be getting all witness statements and going over the scene in detail with witnesses.

A benefit will be that the military will be able to get there hands on any witnesses needed and most of them will give more detailed reports than typical witnesses.

Look, you're exercising really poor timing right now. You're trying to make a political point hours after a tragedy. I'm in Austin right now, and the sun hasn't even set on this awful day.

Stop for a second and think about how you would respond to someone making any of the following arguments right now:

-Guns should be illegal because 12 people are dead
-Guns should be handed to everyone because 12 people are dead
-The military should not have any Muslim members
-The Army is incompetent because this man was able to kill 12 people

You might just be really angry, either because you disagree with some of those positions, or, if you're sane, because ITS 4 HOURS AFTER 12 SERVICEMEN/WOMEN WERE KILLED.

Regardless of your tenuous and bigoted position, exercise some tact and please stfu for a little while.

No, the Nazi practice of making Jews wear yellow stars was taken directly from longstanding European Christian practice. Circular and star-shaped badges, badges in the shape of the Tablets of the Law, and in the shape of a "Jew's hat", mostly in yellow or red, were commonly imposed.

There were various impositions of badges and clothing laws related to Jews in the Muslim world as well, but saying that the Nazis got it from them is pure, revisionist, BS.

Ten of the other dead also were soldiers, while the remaining one was a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.

Two of the injured were in "very serious" condition, Fort Hood spokesman Christopher Hogue said.

More than one shooter may have been involved, Cone said.

"All the casualties took place at the initial incident, that took place at 13:30 [1:30 p.m. CT], at the soldier readiness facility," Cone said.

The primary shooter had two weapons, both handguns, he said.

"The local police response forces were there relatively quickly and killed the confirmed shooter," Cone said.

Fair enough. This fits the jihadi MO, though, and in case you hadn't noticed, the FBI has recently broken up several major attacks, including a planned car bombing in Texas and a conspiracy to bomb a synagogue in New York. It is tremendously counter-productive to deny the facts.

The shooter(s) may be psychos. There will be huge political pressure to deny jihadism, for obvious reasons. But looking away or denying the truth won't help anyone in the long run.

Agree to not ignoring facts, but you have to watch your logic flows.

"Many terrorists are Muslim" does not mean that "many (or all) Muslims are terrorists"

As for "looking away or denying the truth," here's to hoping that when the facts come out you practice what you preach. I for one am proud of the FBI for breaking up any terrorist ring, regardless of its motives, and also happy to say that I have multiple [non-terrorist!] Muslim friends.

The moderate Muslims have no more control or influence over the Jihadis than the Catholics have over any of the Protestant televangelists.

It is not wise to become too emotional or convinced of one side or the other until a plethora of information is made available. I recommend, as several have already done, to discuss this thing rationally and based on facts. And to make clear when you are simply stating a "possible scenario" as opposed to making an over-confident assumption that will likely be interpreted incorrectly.

I'm not talking about the number of bullets, but the accuracy of shots. A 50% hit rate in that circumstance would be better than expected, and that would mean about 80 bullets. Also unknown if there are multiple hits on each target.

Of course, all of this is raw speculation, I admit. Time will tell. I was trying to remember when the last time I was on Fort Hood - I think it was about 3 years ago training soldiers on my company's software. Never got to that post during my active duty years.

I remember the processing center, though.

The rational part of me is screaming at me to wait for the rest of the story. There's no good outcome from this event. There's no motive that would be "less bad." Doctors go in as Captains, and making major in a critically undermanned field would have been almost automatic.

It would be a perfect placement for a sleeper, or for a lone nut with a grudge. It would have been easy for him to fly under the radar.

Hmmm. I'm sure they aren't allowed to carry private firearms on base, but that's true for all military bases and personnel, or was in the years where we considered living on base. I remember my husband's saying we'd have to register weapons and perhaps even store them somewhere approved by the base security guys? This was way back during the WJC administration, so I could be halucinating about the latter.

But I know 100% that guys aren't allowed to carry personal firearms to the office on military bases, and that doctors aren't provided sidearms to carry stateside.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, most people are armed, so this guy wouldn't have been able to kill so many. He would have gotten a few because of the surprise effect, but he would have gone down quicker and from lots of different angles.

That's probably why he did it here, and at a deployment "fair."

Okay let me get this straight: someone goes to four years of medical school and then does a residency studying psychotics and neurotics for three years and the writings of everyone from Freud to Piaget, and then pretends that the angel Gabriel perched on Mohammed's shoulder for twenty-three years and dictated the Koran into his ear sixteen centuries ago, HOWEVER this nonsense somehow pertains to today's world and the psychiatry that he has learned.

Is there anyone here this silly? Beside a "Muslim psychiatrist" of course.

Wall Street Journal reports -

Military officials said that Maj. Hasan was a psychiatrist who had been recently promoted to major and transferred to Fort Hood from Washington's Walter Reed Medical Center. Maj. Hasan's professional specialties included post-traumatic stress disorder, combat stress and other emotional issues common to the troops implicated in earlier incidents of military fratricide.

A defense official said that there "were some signs that this might be an Akbar-type event," a reference to a bloody incident in early 2003 when Army Sgt. Hasan Akbar threw grenades into tents occupied by fellow members of the 101st Airborne Division.

Two officers were killed in the 2003 attack in Kuwait, which wounded 14 others. Military prosecutors said that Sgt. Akbar, who was ultimately sentenced to death, was motivated by anger at the deaths of Iraqi civilians at the hands of U.S. troops.

Other shooting incidents have been linked to combat stress and and emotional problems many soldiers are suffering after long, repeat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. With the military stretched thin by the long wars, many troops have done three and in some cases four tours to the war zones.

So this guy is an expert on PTSD. The article implies that PTSD is common among those who have seen repeated tours. Yet there is no mention of whether Hasan has been deployed there before. Was this his first deployment? Are we looking at Pre Traumatic Stress Disorder?

@ 457
America's first war. Barbary Pirates - Muslim.

Your example are fair. However in the modern era, or should we say in the past couple of decades a fair amount of terrorism is Muslim related. Muslims make up about 20% of the Worlds population. Islamic terrorist groups make up about 50% of the terrorist groups.

So though there are non Muslim terrorism groups, they make up a larger proportion than their share of the population would seem to indicate. If you limited it to religious based terrorism groups that number would be a lot higher.

Islam has a terrorism problem. It's a fact that is to often white washed or excused. But ignoring that problem won't make it go away nor lessen the consequences when it happens. And for the record the most common victim of Muslim violence is other Muslims.

I don't get how this fucker became a United States Army Major.

Wasn't this addressed upthread? He entered as a M.D. which means he starts as a captain and can easily become a major. I could be wrong but that's how I understood it.

Also, people can't actually predict the future and all that.

Sorry if I was overbroad. You two are respectful to those who disagree with you on religion. Right Brain is not. His denigration of faith and seeming denial that one could be a man of science and a man of faith at the same time were the targets of my ire, not atheism per se. It's all right if you do not believe in God, as long as you respect my beliefs and I respect yours. Both of you admirably meet that standard.

Which is why I didn't downding you, just Right Brain. I intuited that this was your position. Unfortunately, there are some atheists who go out of their way to ridicule other people and are simply jerks. I don't dismiss people that easily, and am ever interested in what inspires other people to step beyond the norm, even if it is religion. I've met too many people who have absolutely no decency, so a decent person automatically commands my respect.

Yes, the colonel/co-worker being interviewed on Fox just now is providing a lot of insights: the major was asocial, opposed to involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, had issues with other soldiers, etc.

Equally as infuriating as "Gee he was such a nice, quiet guy..." is "He was an asshole and all his co-workers saw this coming."

It would be really upsetting if his co-workers said "He was moderate, average, and just like the rest of us." But no, apparently this was no mystery. When are we going to believe that people mean what they say? Is it just too scary to take somebody at face value when they say "I'm gonna kill you"?

Thanks, W!

And yeah, Bush had 8 years to increase the size of the military. From 2002 until 2006 the GOP controlled congress and the White House. I still remember the day my husband came home in spring of 2006 and told me that the USAF was going to cut 40,000 active duty troops because of repeated budget cuts.

The Army and Marines got screwed for years and years by the GOP while they were out there saying that they "supported the troops" better than democrats.

I heard an interview on NPR a year or 2 ago with a PTSD therapist who went down to New Orleans for a year and at the end of the year he told a friend to leave him quickly because he had a strong urge to bludgeon him to death. The therapist said that you can start to dwell in the same place as those you treat and, in a sense, "catch it."

At the time I thought the report to be a bit hyperbolic but now I fell compelled to find it. I wonder if it is the same thing.

re: #560 Waste93

Excuse me but how exactly would have computed that? Are we talking current ones? Active? Named? Or just some number you happened to pull out of a hat?
If you go back 30 years in time islamic terrorist groups were virtually non-existent. That would certainly be defined as "in the modern era" as far as I am concerned. Terrorism back then was primarily politically motivated (maoist/marxist/anarchist) unless it was related to Ireland in which case they were killing each other over religion. So really it's only in the last 20 years or so we have seen the real rise of the islamic terrorism and that will, just like maoist terrorism, fade into the background in time.

According to the Colonel Lee (I think that's his name), who was just interviewed by Shepard Smith, Hasan was on record with multiple people present as saying that more Muslims needed to resist the aggressor (that would be you and me). He evidently went so far as to say that more Muslims should strap bombs to themselves and resist. The Colonel being interviewed worked along side Hasan at Walter Reed.

They're both nightmare scenarios. If it's an AQ cell, then it's scary that they've made it to the homeland. If it's Sudden Jihad Syndrome, then a cloud of suspicion will float over every Muslim in the country.

However, I'll double down that there will be no anti-Muslim "backlash", just as there was no backlash after 9/11, despite what libs & CAIR kept insisting. Individually and nationally, we are better people than other peoples and nations who do that.

Handguns can only be purchased in the state of your residency. Guns are 100% legal to sell without a check if its a private sale. I can sell you a gun right now just like if I was selling you a lawn mower.

True. Guns purchased at stores or shows always involve background checks—unless the seller wishes to commit a felony. Private sales do not have to have any background check, but if it can be proven that the seller knows that the gun is to be used for a crime or that the buyer is forbidden by law from owning a gun, the seller commits a felony.

Possibly. The cousin is trying to lay down the grounds that this scumbag was driven crazy by the hostility he received. I call BS on this.

This is one of the most spectacularly ignorant statements I've seen posted here.

In Ireland alone there's been the Provisional IRA, the Official IRA, the Continuity IRA, the Real IRA, the INLA, the IPLO, Saor Eire, Saor Uladh, Oglaigh na hEireann (a recent Real IRA split), the Red Hand Commando, the Ulster Volunteer Force, the Ulster Defence Association and the Loyalist Volunteer Force, to name just the major players. None of these organisations are exactly noted for their Islamic piety.

Most serial killers are men. Therefore we need to be wary of all men.

Just trying to keep up with the lesson.

Not so much, buddy.
This is just normal family spin... I feel for him, but you have to consider the source.

I agree. What do people expect him to say? "Oh, yeah, my cousin was a crazed jihadist; we all knew it was only a matter of time before he snapped and took everyone within arm's reach with him"?

This is the sort of thing that close friends and family always say after some horrible event like this.

re: #537 enoughalready
Not sure if you understood my post. The point is: there's a reason that most suicide-attacks are committed by Muslims. This religion offers the perfect fundament for a special kind of hatred: the ideology of abnegation, that hates life and praises death, that is strictly opposed to physical pleasure, consequently leads in the end to the hatred of the own body. The final fight, the explosion that destroys not only the "total enemies", but also the own body, unites the "small" and the "big" jihad.
To understand this dynamics, it is recommended to read the "father" of the suicide-bombings, Carl Schmitt and his ideology about a "total enemy".

What part of "nearly all" don't you understand? There's only one terrorist movement that kills Jews in Israel, Buddhists in Thailand, Hindus in India, Christians in Pakistan and Nigeria, insufficiently pure Muslims in Algeria, and Americans and Europeans wherever they may be found. If you hear of a bus bombing or a throat slitting on the news you may not be able to guess where it happened. But you've got decent odds of guessing who did it.

There's really no good that can come from adamantly remaining in a sensitivity coma about this.

Cable news needs a narrative, and this is the handiest narrative that they're prepared for. It makes for good TV to bring in experts on PTSD, fills up the space in between breaking developments, keeps people watching.

There's the news, and there's the news product. The PTSD I think is more the latter.

Um, please. This isn't about PTSD. Guys with PTSD don't calmly walk into a deployment fair and start killing soldiers who are standing in lines waiting to get their papers punched.

You are close to insulting a lot of folks who are struggling with after-effects of wartime service.

re: #708 Canadian Guy

Can it be PTSD if you've never been deployed???

PTSD isn't limited to combat trauma. Police, hostages and accident victims can also suffer from it. It isn't limited to the military, although that's where it was first identified. And within the military, as noted, it isn't necessarily limited to the battlefield, although the sort of trauma that normally induces it wouldn't be common in non-deployed assignments.

It is a sign of mental illness when a person (look in the mirror) continues to try to bring negative attention to themselves, like you keep doing. Instead of debating or trying to use some critical thinking about the issues, and our opinions of your comments, you simply keep coming back acting like a jerk.

Hey - here is something I don't get.

Is it now verboten to associate what is obviously a violent, criminal act against US uniformed personnel with the perpetrators faith (Islam) and speculate that jihad might be a motivation?

Is that bigotry?

I mean, the guy went and slaughtered 9 people and tried to kill another 30 at a processing center for an Iraq deployment. Because his car was keyed?

I am not willing to embrace the notion that this is Mohammed Atta II, but I am not going to scream "bigot" at anyone who says it might be SJS.

Now someone who goes off on "of course it is jihad because all Muslims want to kill infidels" garbage - yes. You've got a bigot.

But SJS is a distinct and yet disproved motivation. And a Pentagon Official is quoted in a WSJ article I posted upthread as saying that this may be another Hasan Akbar incident. SJS in that case.

Yes, I called you a bigot. I am an atheist, have been most of my life. I am very capable of making my point about my denial of the supernatural, but I don't have to resort to derogatory terms like "invisible people" and "Psychiatrist needs a Psychiatrist," which is certainly bigoted rhetoric.

You didn't go into a logical debate of the supernatural, you simply put this man down with snide and bigoted remarks.

Yes, you are a bigot, when you use terms like that, when you peg people like him with terms like that, that's bigoted.

Cable news, ANY cable news, should be taken with a thousand bavarian soft pretzels' worth of salt. Mr. Hasan is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

According to the Austin American Statesman, Mr. Hasan’s parents were born in Jordan. The newspaper quoted Representative Michael McCaul of Austin, who has been briefed on the shootings at Fort Hood, as saying that Mr. Hasan “took a lot of advanced training in shooting.

re: #366 D.C. Law

Of course not all Muslims are terrorists. But nearly all terrorists are Muslim. That is a fact. Not all Germans were Nazis, but from the standpoint of political analysis, so what? Therefore, if we are going to deal with the problem effectively we must acknowledge this. Also, we must acknowledge the fact that the Muslim leadership in the US (and possibly the Muslim "street", depending on how you read the data) has utterly failed to spit out jihadism. And we must deal with that as well. These are hard questions, and there are no easy answers, but denial and cover-up is not the way to go.

I think the point that you are missing, and earning you a lot of minuses, is that this blog is not about conspiracy theories before facts are known, nor is it about Muslim bashing for it's own sake. Chances are you will have reason to be critical of CAIR in due course. Wait for it.
